COMPOSTABLE VS. BIODEGRADABLE
Time:2022-07-26

“Biodegradable” is a chemical process in which microorganisms available in the environment can break down into natural substance, such as water and carbon dioxide. The “biodegradable” process depends on environmental conditions, such as location, temperature, materials and applications.
Consumers are easily misled by the word “biodegradable”, “degradable” and “compostable”, because the materials claimed to be “compostable” on the market may only break down partially, and the left are still plastic. According to EN 13432, “compostable materials” must show the following characteristics: Compostable materials have ability to transform into CO2 under the action of microorganisms.
Compostable materials do not leave plastic fragments in the residue, do not contain heavy metals or toxic substances, and can maintain the life of plants.
